Unusual Machines, a Florida-based drone manufacturer with ties to Donald Trump Jr., has secured its largest Pentagon contract to date. The U.S. Army awarded the company a deal to supply 3,500 drone motors and components, with plans to order an additional 20,000 parts in the coming year. This contract marks a significant milestone for the company, which has previously struggled with profitability and international trade challenges.

Trump Jr. joined Unusual Machines as an advisor in November 2024, acquiring shares valued at approximately US$ 4 million. Despite his stake and advisory role, both Trump Jr. and the company assert that he had no involvement in securing the contract. A company spokesperson emphasized that Trump Jr.’s advisory position does not include interfacing with the government on behalf of the company.

The timing of the contract coincides with the Trump administration’s push to bolster domestic drone production. In June 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14307, directing federal agencies to prioritize American-made drones. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has since expedited drone acquisitions, focusing on affordable, mass-produced models for training and combat.

Unusual Machines has also formed partnerships with other defense entities, including an US$ 12.8 million deal with Strategic Logix. However, the company reported a US$ 3.3 million loss in early 2025, partly due to tariffs affecting component sourcing outside China. Shares in the company surged 13% following the contract announcement, reflecting investor optimism.

While the contract has propelled Unusual Machines into the spotlight, it has also raised ethical questions regarding potential conflicts of interest. The company’s rapid ascent and its association with Trump Jr. have prompted scrutiny from both political observers and industry analysts. As the American military continues to expand its reliance on drones, the intersection of politics and defense contracting remains a topic of ongoing debate.
