Why VCs Are Backing EigenLayer — And What Restaking Means for Ethereum

Table of Contents

“Restaking” is the latest crypto infrastructure fever, and all eyes are on EigenLayer. The Ethereum-native protocol explore a very simple idea: instead of letting staked ETH inactive, restaking lets users reuse that same collateral to secure additional decentralized protocols. It’s a model that promises scalability and composability, but also raises serious questions about systemic risk.

At its core, EigenLayer enables stakers or liquid staking token (LST) holders to opt in and “re-stake” their assets to support other networks or layers, such as oracle services, bridges, or rollups. This creates a kind of pooled security ecosystem around Ethereum. In simpler terms, it allows the same ETH to be reused to secure multiple projects at once, like using the same deposit to back several services —which boosts efficiency but also concentrates risk.

Now, it’s catching the attention of most influential venture capital firms. Last year, EigenLayer raised a $100 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), adding to earlier backing from Paradigm, Coinbase Ventures and Electric Capital. For VCs, EigenLayer represents more than another staking derivative play, it’s a bet that Ethereum’s can evolve into a security base layer, providing it as a service.

Double trouble

But the model holds controversy. Security experts warn that restaking introduces correlated risks: if a protocol leveraging restaked ETH is compromised, it would trigger cascading losses, or in other terms, an evil domino effect. Protocols that piggyback on the same collateral become intertwined, after all.

EigenLayer team has acknowledged these concerns and is developing opt-in slashing mechanisms to reduce what they call contagion risks.
That sort of issue hasn’t slowed adoption, tough. As of July 2025, EigenLayer has almos US$ 16 billion in total value locked (TVL), a number that represents how much holders have deposited on the system. The Ethereum Foundation has yet to take an official stance, but insiders say the success of restaking could influence future changes to the ecossystem.

For now, EigenLayer sits at the intersection of crypto’s most ambitious ideas: modular blockchains, shared security, and financial efficiency. Whether restaking becomes a pillar of Web3 infrastructure or the next Terra-style collapse will depend on how well risks are managed and whether the hype is backed by resilient design and user engagement.
